About Christmas dummy boards and prints
Dummy boards make up most of this room: flat, cut-out figures that stand on a hearth, a step, or the corner of a mantel. These come in metal or in paperboard on wood, and many figures come in two sizes, about 18 and 36 inches, so a pair can stand one in front of the other.
The cast is traditional. Santa with bells, Santa with children, a long-beard Santa, snowmen, penguins, sheep, angels, a nativity, and Hank and Holly the reindeer. Christmas dummy boards earn their keep on a stair landing, where nothing else fits.
The rest is framed prints of fawns, stags, and cardinals, small photo frames, and decorative journals, paper over wood, with titles like A Christmas Carol and Winter Evergreens.
What is a dummy board?
A flat figure, cut to shape and painted, that stands on its own. The idea goes back to 17th-century England and the Netherlands. Ours are new, in metal or paperboard on wood.
Do dummy boards stand up by themselves?
Yes. Each one is made to be freestanding on a mantel, a hearth, or a step. The 36-inch figures and larger are tall enough for the floor.
Are there dummy boards for other seasons?
A few. The everyday frames room has bunnies, sheep, chicks, and a vintage-style Santa, and the fall rooms have a witch and a pair of cats on a fence.
